EPIPHANY
Terms & Symbols of the Season

EPIPHANY:  The name of this Christian festival is Greek for manifestation or revelation. To the ancients, the invincible sun's power was revealed each dawn. Jesus reveals His Father's power to save through His own humble birth and ministry on the cross.

LIGHT:  is an ancient Epiphany symbol. To be "in the light" was to be alive and well in a right relationship with God. The New Testament calls Christ the Light of the World, who brings us into a right relationship with His Father through knowledge, healing and salvation.

MAGI:  were priest-scholars in Persia, not kings. The early Christians were fascinated by them. The magi appeared in countless Christian mosaics and manuscripts, colorful visitors from "the nations" in the humble nativity story. Their number is not recorded in Scripture, perhaps the idea that there were three comes from the list of gifts given to the Baby.

STAR:  The magi followed the Epiphany star because they believed that stars announced events. As King David wrote, the heavens do God's will, declaring His glory, Psalm 19:1. The magi would have recognized the royal symbols in the prophecy, "a royal star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter ... out of Israel.", Numbers 24:17.

NATIONS:  is an Epiphany word because God's revelation of Himself among His chosen people also affects all the peoples of the world. The Lord reveals His power in order to set things right and to offer mercy to the wayward, Isaiah 60:1-6.

GOLD, FRANKINCENSE, MYRRH:  As symbols they point to royalty and death, for myrrh may have been used as the spice for Jesus' burial. Moses offered myrrh on the new altar of the first tabernacle. Psalm 45 calls it a perfume for the King of Israel, and the Romans used it as perfume, medicine and incense.

WATER AND WINE:  were early Epiphany symbols because the first Gospel lessons for Epiphany spoke of the revelation of Jesus as the Son of God at His baptism or the beginning of His ministy at the wedding of Cana where He turned water to wine. The story of the magi dominates Epiphany and the story of the baptism of Jesus is in the Bible readings the following Sunday.

Promises from the Bible

GOD'S PROMISE WHEN YOU:  Are Anxious

Matthew 6:25: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?"

Matthew 11:28-29: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."

Philippians 4:6-7: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

1 Peter 5:7: Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
